“The mountain of Qiang”is a plan based on Lyu Geer’s hometown ,Wenchuan,Qiang ethnic minority.The construction after the 2008 earthquake has accelerated the process of modernization in the mountains, and the regional communication became more intense and the boundary became blurred. He went through a similar field work to the local area in the early days，in a process of “re-familiarity”, the anxiety about identity gradually amplified.So He took this question to the behavior of “Finding the sea up the mountain”(Chapter 2).During the Triassic period, the Wenchuan area was in the coastal environment,He asked if the Qiang people had memories of Wenchuan and the sea.He also went up the mountain to find traces left by the sea.On the way, He met snowmen with arms open, painted white stones, fake horses, pandas……These scenes have a subtle connection with the first chapter, “The mountain of Qiang”.“Finding the sea up the mountain”，this pointless behavior seems to be like climbing trees to catch fish.Beginning to turn to more poetic, the search for geographical and identity images.After that He collected sand from the mountains, sprinkled on film in dark room.Getting the original image of “Star sea” (Chapter 3).And referring to large number of images of the stars, He painted a color that looks as real as possible for “Star sea”. He also seem to find the answer.
Chapter I The mountain of Qiang
The acceptation of “Qiang” has been changing over the past thousand years. In ancient times, it was a general term for many different nomadic peoples in the West of China. Today, the Qiang means the Qiang nationality who live in the mountains of southwestern China. After the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, the government strongly reconstructed this area.The mountains, which were the block of the communication with the outside world, after the road that passes vehicles has been built, become the accelerator of urbanization. I try to use a point of view from an old Chinese saying called “Being in the mountains”, to find what I expect of the Qiang people, Qiang region, mountains and the contemporary relationship between human and Landscape.
Shibi of Qiang is one of the photography clue, they have to learn by heart the entire history of the Qiang and all their scriptures, because the Qiang language has no written form. Shibi also plays an important role in Qiang’s festivals, cultivation, marriage and funeral. My creation revolves around Shibi, Qiang’s beliefs, people and land. Other clue is about the boundary of communication between the majority and the minority nationalities. The earliest I traced back to the Three Kingdoms Period. Jiang Wei, the general of Shu State, who carried out Zhuge Liang’s policy of harmony with minority nationalities. And western missionaries in the 20th century investigated Qiang with an early anthropological method, Chinese anthropological photographer ZhuangXueben. I looked back at them in history and space, in a displacement way. During the Cultural Revolution, traditional culture was suppressed, but now the government is vigorously developing minority tourism. At last, I want to reflect this change.
